Ecological disaster strikes Natal – 1,600 million liters of oil and acid are dumped into the river, killing thousands of fish and losing vegetation

In the past week, nearly 1,600 cubic meters (1.6 million liters) of oil and acid have been dumped in the Mduduzi River. Willowton Oil is responsible for the disaster that is considered to be one of the greatest in the history of Natal.

Cato Ridge and the Umgeni River are already polluted and the pollution has reached the Inanda Dam that is fed by the river.

Experts believe it will take years for the ecology to be restored and believe the approach taken by the government is very slim to the possibility of recovery.

Thousands of fish have died and the nearby vegetation is waning from the suffocating oil in the dam.

Two lions escaped through damaged fence in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park – hopefully they not craving human meat

The spokesperson for the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Service confirmed that two lions broke through due to a weak spot in the fence and are still at large.

Initially five lions broke out of the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, but three of the dangerous animals were already arrested, but on Tuesday, two were still on the loose.

Park officials are deeply concerned about the two lions that have gone missing, and seniors say those responsible for checking the fences regularly are an equally serious concern for the Park.

Spokespeople say the damaged fence has not yet been repaired and will “soon” receive attention, although a large number of lions are still being kept in the camp.

Meanwhile, emerging farmers in the area claimed that the lions had already caught and eaten some of their animals, which will now also be investigated.

Auto racing on the increase on Durban streets- traffic department says they can’t issue fine tickets because camera system is not functioning properly

For more than two years, Durban was the racing devil’s race track, as all speed traps with cameras were out of order.

The city had virtually no revenue from speeding violations for two years, and the single traffic violation noticed by traffic officials also did not always result in a fine ticket.

The inexplicable is that the traffic department says they can’t issue a ticket because the camera system is not functioning properly.

However, a spokeswoman for the municipality says it does not mean that the streets of the city are unsafe as the traffic staff “works very hard” to ensure that law and order are maintained.

A reader told Die Vryburger he was aware of several cases where traffic officials “exempted” fines for their friends.

Durban cops say they live like sewage rats in ‘disgusting’ police building – Government buildings going into shambles

Durban – Durban police officers say they are living like sewage rats while they are expected to be dignified officers and lead by example.

Residential flats meant for police members are in a shocking state and government departments shift the blame and responsibility on to each other.

An officer who called the Independent on Saturday said many of the flats did not have working water and electricity, and that criminals had moved in to some of the flats.

“This is our disgusting daily lives,” said a SAPS Warrant Officer, who asked not to be named, a resident of Excelsior Court building on Ridge Road.

“We are expected to be dignified officers and lead by example, but we live like sewage rats. There is no water or electricity in some of these flats. We use the water from the fire extinguisher pipes to cook and to do all the household activities,” he said.

4 Police officers charged with kidnapping, assault and extortion but SAPS has not suspended them and they still serving the public

Durban – The four Inanda police officers arrested for kidnapping, assault and extortion at a truck yard in Springfield Park recently have not been suspended from the force, the Durban Magistrate’s Court heard on Friday.

One will report weekly to the station where he works as part of his bail conditions while the others will have to sign the bail register at stations closer to their homes.

At their bail application on Friday, investigating officer Detective Captain Paulos Sithembiso Vezi’s affidavit described how they were arrested.

One of the accused placed a call to arrange a meeting to receive clandestine money, but the cellphone receiving his call was at the wrong place – it was answered by the victim who was at Greenwood Park police station reporting the crime. His phone was placed on loudspeaker mode while the arrangements were being made.

Angry students disrupt lectures and blockaded the main entrance to the Westville campus by burning furniture and debris over registrations

The student representatives council (SCR) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) is expected to meet the institution’s vice-chancellor on Friday.

This follows disruptions at the university’s Westville campus on Wednesday. Angry students disrupted lectures and blockaded the main entrance to the university by burning furniture and debris.

The executive director for corporate relations at UKZN, Ashton Bodrick, confirmed that the university remained open and that academic programmes would continue as scheduled, despite further protests by students on Thursday.

“Some students on the Westville campus continued with their protest action this morning. We have received reports that some lectures were disrupted. The executive management committee (EMC) has given due consideration to the matters raised by the students and is engaging the SRC leadership on a way forward.”

Rats infest Durban CBD because of uncollected rubbish on the streets, Business and tourism now being threatened

Durban – Traders in the City centre say their businesses and health have been affected by the huge rat population that has continued to grow because of uncollected rubbish on the streets.

They say there has been an overall decline in business and tourism while the condition of buildings has also deteriorated. Areas popular with hawkers such as Warwick Junction Market, Mahatma Gandhi precinct, Berea and Durban Workshop taxi ranks as well as bus terminals have been most affected.

Pinky Nyathela, who trades at the Warwick Junction Market, said the number of rats had tripled since she began trading in 2016. “There are more rats than usual and they are becoming bigger. They are not scared of people, they look straight at you,” she said.

Health experts said the rat infestation posed a great risk which could “explode” if not brought under control.

Durban – Sardines have been spotted in Waterfall Bluff in Port St John’s south of KwaZulu-Natal’s coastline. Ugu South Coast Tourism CEO, Phelisa Mangcu, advises visitors to keep their eyes on the local press and follow the KZN Sharks Board, fishing experts such as GoFish, as well as the fishing charters whose business it is to know the waters and marine life of the KZN South Coast.
